THE Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially confirmed the arrival of approximately 100 United States military personnel in Nigeria to strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

According to military authorities, the U.S. personnel and their equipment landed at the Bauchi Airfield as part of a bilateral defence cooperation agreement between Nigeria and the United States.

The arrangement followed a formal request by the Federal Government to enhance specialised training and technical support for Nigerian troops.

The DHQ disclosed that the decision was finalised during a joint working group meeting involving senior defence officials from both countries. The discussions reportedly centred on bridging identified gaps in training, intelligence sharing, and technical operations within the Nigerian military.

A senior military official explained that the visiting American personnel are “highly skilled technical experts assigned strictly to advisory and training responsibilities.”

“They are not combat troops and will not participate in any fighting operations,” the official clarified.

The Defence Headquarters further emphasised that all acti

vities will be carried out under the supervision and authority of the Nigerian Government, in close collaboration with the nation’s military leadership.

“This partnership is designed to enhance the professional competence of our personnel and improve our strategic response to emerging security threats,” the DHQ stated.

Military authorities noted that the cooperation will grant Nigerian forces access to advanced technical expertise aimed at improving counterterrorism efforts and safeguarding vulnerable communities across the country.

Joint training sessions and intelligence-driven engagements are expected to commence immediately, with a focus on strengthening the capacity of troops to detect, deter, and neutralise extremist elements threatening national stability.

Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians of transparency throughout the collaboration.

“We remain resolute in our mission to dismantle terrorist networks and protect Nigeria’s sovereignty. The public will continue to receive accurate and timely updates regarding this cooperation,” the statement added.
