FIRE DESTROYS OFFICIAL RECORDS AT KWARA UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION

Date: Sunday, 1st February, 2026 (13th Sha'ban, 1447 AH).

SEVERAL official records, including files, documents and journals, were destroyed on Friday night after a fire outbreak gutted storage offices at the Kwara State University of Education, Ilorin.

The incident occurred at about 9:14 p.m. and affected three out of four buildings housing offices used for the storage of the institution’s official records.

Some students of the university disclosed that the fire also impacted the institution’s Biology Laboratory, although the extent of damage was not immediately clear.

It was gathered that the affected facility was formerly used by the Kwara State College of Education before it was converted to the University of Education by the state government.

Preliminary findings suggested that the fire may have been triggered by bush burning, allegedly set by an unidentified individual, which later spread to the buildings.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters responded swiftly to the distress call and were able to contain the blaze.

“Our officers acted promptly and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the Biology Laboratory and other adjoining structures,” Adekunle stated.

He added that although some records were lost, several important files and documents were salvaged during the firefighting operation.

Adekunle further disclosed that the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, cautioned institutions and residents against indiscriminate bush burning, especially within and around school premises.

He advised educational institutions to adopt safer vegetation-clearing methods, create buffer zones around buildings, ensure proper storage of sensitive documents and install basic firefighting equipment to minimise damage during fire incidents.

The Kwara State Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
