FIRE SCARE AT JERICHO AS TANKER INCIDENT ENGULFS SAO FILLING STATION

Tension spread across the Jericho axis of Ibadan on Monday following a fire outbreak at the SAO Filling Station, reportedly involving a petrol tanker operating within the station premises.

The incident, which occurred suddenly, caused panic among motorists, customers, and nearby residents, as thick smoke billowed into the air, raising fears of a possible explosion.

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Kunle, said the situation escalated within minutes.

“We just heard a loud sound and saw smoke coming out near the tanker. Everybody started running because it’s a filling station and anything could happen,” he said.

Another resident living close to the station noted that the fire created fear beyond the immediate vicinity.

“Even people inside nearby shops ran out. Parents were calling their children. It was very tense,” she explained.

Preliminary accounts suggest the fire may have been triggered during tanker-related operations, though the exact cause remains unconfirmed as at the time of filing this report.

Following distress calls from the public, the Oyo State Fire Service was swiftly mobilised to the scene, and firefighters were seen actively working to control the flames and prevent them from spreading to fuel pumps, storage facilities, and surrounding buildings.

As of press time, no casualties have been officially reported, while assessment of possible damage to property is still ongoing. Officials are expected to issue a formal statement after investigations are concluded.

The incident has once again highlighted safety concerns at fuel stations, particularly during tanker handling and off-loading operations, as such environments remain highly vulnerable due to the flammable nature of petroleum products.
