ISRAELI AIRSTRIKES KILL 11 PALESTINIANS IN GAZA

NO fewer than 11 Palestinians were killed on Saturday following fresh Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, according to the territory’s Ministry of Health.

The ministry said the casualties included civilians sheltering in a displacement tent in southern Gaza, as the Director-General of the Ministry of Health, Munir al-Barsh, told AFP that the victims died after Israeli strikes hit a tent housing displaced civilians and a residential apartment.

He disclosed that at least 20 other persons sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals in Gaza City and Khan Yunis for medical attention.

Al-Barsh accused Israel of repeatedly breaching the ceasefire agreement, stressing that Gaza’s health system remains under severe strain due to shortages of medicines, medical supplies and equipment.

“The occupation continues its serious violations of the ceasefire amid an acute lack of medical resources,” he said.

A United States-brokered ceasefire, which took effect in October, entered its second phase in January.

The agreement is expected to include the disarmament of Hamas, a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of an international stabilisation force.

Despite the truce, Israel and Hamas have continued to trade accusations over violations of the agreement.

Meanwhile, Gaza’s Hamas-run government press office stated that seven members of a displaced family were killed in the strike on a tent in southern Gaza, including a child and an elderly person.

The Ministry of Health also reported that at least 509 people have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect on October 10.

The ongoing conflict has displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza, with hundreds of thousands of residents still living in tents and temporary shelters.

The war began after Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,221 people, according to official Israeli figures compiled by AFP.

Israel’s military response has since devastated large parts of Gaza, a territory already affected by years of conflict and a blockade imposed by Israel since 2007.

After more than two years of fighting, the death toll in Gaza has risen to over 71,769, according to the Ministry of Health, figures the United Nations considers reliable.
