OYO STATE LAUNCHES JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS, MARKING 50-YEAR PROGRESS

Date: Monday, 26th January, 2026 (7th Sha'ban, 1447AH).

OYO State has officially begun celebrations marking 50 years since its creation, with an opening ceremony at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

The event brought together government officials, traditional rulers, cultural performers, and invited guests from across Nigeria, signaling the start of a week-long festival of heritage and community engagement.

Governor Seyi Makinde who described the milestone as a moment of past celebration, emphasized that the anniversary is not just ceremonial but beneficial for residents through community-focused programmes.

“This golden jubilee is about honouring our legacy, strengthening our present, and envisioning the future we want for Oyo State,” he said.

The opening ceremony featured traditional dances, drum performances, poetry readings, and documentary screenings, highlighting the state’s rich cultural heritage.

Hon. Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, chairman of the jubilee committee, explained that activities are designed to reach all 33 Local Government Areas, ensuring every community shares in the celebrations.

“From cultural showcases to health and educational outreach programmes, we want every resident to feel part of this historic moment,” he said.

Beyond the opening, residents can expect medical outreaches, open-air film screenings in Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Saki, and Eruwa, cultural parades, fashion shows, and youth empowerment initiatives.

The celebrations will culminate on February 3, the official anniversary date, with a formal closing ceremony, awards night, and airshow, honouring former governors, civic leaders, and other distinguished citizens.

Governor Makinde reiterated the importance of combining celebration with meaningful action, saying, “Our goal is to celebrate Oyo State not only with pomp and pageantry but through initiatives that improve the lives of our people and strengthen our communities.”

With a mix of culture, civic engagement, and reflection, Oyo State’s golden jubilee is shaping up to be a historic occasion that honours its past while preparing for the next 50 years.
