FG COMMENCES FREE CANCER SCREENING PROGRAMME IN EBONYI

Abakaliki — THE Federal Government has launched a free cancer screening exercise in Ebonyi State as part of a nationwide health intervention aimed at improving early detection and reducing cancer-related deaths.

The programme, which commenced at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, is expected to provide screening services for 1,000 individuals in its initial phase.

Health officials said the exercise aligns with efforts to raise public awareness and strengthen preventive healthcare.

Speaking on behalf of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, officials explained that cancer remains a significant public health concern, with late diagnosis contributing heavily to mortality rates.

They noted that individuals diagnosed during the screening would be linked to appropriate treatment and care.

The initiative also includes training sessions for medical personnel on modern cancer management practices, safety procedures during chemotherapy, and pain control methods.

Authorities said this would improve service delivery across healthcare facilities nationwide.

The Chief Medical Director of the teaching hospital described the programme as a major step toward expanding access to quality healthcare in the South-East.

He added that the hospital has continued to attract patients from within and outside Nigeria due to recent improvements in service capacity.

He further stated that the screening focuses on the most prevalent cancers in the country, including breast, cervical, and prostate cancers, while also promoting preventive measures such as health education and vaccination.

Government officials commended the Ebonyi State Government for its support, noting that collaboration between federal and state authorities remains vital to achieving sustainable health outcomes.
