NORTH Korean leader, Kim Jong Un has reportedly designated his 13-year-old daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as his successor, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).

The agency informed lawmakers on Thursday that its assessment was based on Ju Ae’s increasing presence at key state events and her prominent portrayal in official media. She first appeared publicly in 2022 during a missile inspection and has since accompanied her father to major military and political functions, including a recent trip to Beijing.

South Korean lawmaker Lee Seong-kwen said Ju Ae, previously believed to be undergoing leadership grooming, has now entered the stage of formal “successor designation.” He added that signs suggest she may already be involved in discussions on certain state matters.

Attention is now on whether she will attend the Workers’ Party congress later this month — the country’s highest political gathering, where long-term plans on foreign policy, military strategy and nuclear development are expected to be outlined.

Ju Ae is the only publicly known child of Kim and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. Although reports suggest the existence of an older son, he has never been officially acknowledged.

Leadership in North Korea has remained within the Kim family for three generations, and observers believe Kim intends to preserve the dynasty. However, the reported move has raised questions in a traditionally patriarchal society.
