NECO UNVEILS 2025 SSCE EXTERNAL RESULTS AS OVER 80% ATTAIN FIVE CREDITS

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, recording a strong overall performance among candidates nationwide.

According to figures presented by the council, 96,979 candidates enrolled for the examination across 16 subjects, made up of 51,823 males and 45,156 females. Of this number, 95,160 candidates eventually participated in the exercise.

Performance statistics revealed that 82,082 candidates—representing 86.26 per cent—secured five credits and above irrespective of English Language and Mathematics. Meanwhile, 68,166 candidates, accounting for 71.63 per cent, achieved five credits and above including both core subjects.

A subject-by-subject analysis showed that 93,425 candidates sat for English Language, with 73,167 obtaining credit passes or higher, translating to 78.32 per cent. In Mathematics, 85,256 out of the 93,330 candidates who took the paper earned credit and above, representing 91.35 per cent.

The release was formally announced on Tuesday by NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, during a press interaction at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. He later reaffirmed the development in a video message shared on NECO’s official X platform.

Prof. Wushishi explained that candidates can check their results through the council’s official website by inputting their examination registration numbers.

Reacting to integrity during examination, the registrar disclosed that 9,016 candidates were flagged for various examination infractions, a rise of 31.7 per cent when compared with the 6,160 malpractice cases recorded in the 2024 external examination.

He added that disciplinary measures had been recommended against five supervisors—two from the Federal Capital Territory and one each from Kano, Adamawa and Ondo states—for their alleged roles in facilitating malpractice.

Furthermore, four examination centres were proposed for de-recognition after investigations uncovered cases of whole-centre malpractice. The affected centres are located in Niger, Yobe and Kano states, with two centres reportedly from Niger State.

The SSCE External examination is designed primarily for private candidates seeking secondary school certification outside the regular school system.

NECO stated that the external examination continues to serve as an alternative pathway for candidates who missed the internal SSCE or intend to improve their previously obtained grades.
