RAMADAN 1447AH: SULTAN OF SOKOTO DIRECTS MUSLIMS TO OBSERVE CRESCENT TOMORROW

THE Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has announced that Muslims across the country should look out for the crescent marking the beginning of Ramadan 1447AH on Tuesday evening (tomorrow), 17th February, 2026.

The directive was issued by the President-General of the Council and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, in a statement endorsed by the NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, and released to the press.

According to the statement, “If the crescent is sighted on Tuesday, fasting will commence on Wednesday, 18 February 2026. However, if it is not sighted, Ramadan will begin on Thursday, 19 February 2026.”

The Sultan disclosed that the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), working alongside the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has concluded arrangements for coordinated and official observation across the country.

The Council also expressed concern over the scheduling of elections during the fasting period by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), noting that the development was “not unexpected.” It added, “We are monitoring the situation closely and anticipate a prompt reconsideration.”

Encouraging Muslims to remain steadfast, the Council cited the Qur’anic reassurance: “Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” It further referenced Qur’an 2:185, reminding believers that Allah desires ease for them and not difficulty, urging gratitude and spiritual devotion.

Ramadan, regarded as the month in which the first revelation of the Qur’an was sent to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is observed with daily fasting from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib).

The fast involves abstaining from food, drink, and other physical desires as an act of worship and a means of attaining greater consciousness of Allah (taqwa).

Muslims are therefore encouraged to utilise the sacred month for reflection, repentance, and intensified supplication.
