RAMADAN, LENT BEGIN TOGETHER AFTER 33 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

MUSLIMS and Christians around the world have entered their sacred fasting seasons simultaneously, as Ramadan and Lent begin on the same day for the first time in 33 years.

The last occurrence was in 1993, making this year’s alignment notable for both faiths. Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, which is approximately 10 to 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar.

As a result, the month of fasting shifts earlier each year and coincides with Lent roughly once every three decades.

In Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and several other nations, Muslims commenced fasting at dawn on Wednesday after authorities confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon, marking the start of Ramadan 1447.

In Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan following verified moon sightings across various parts of the country on the 29th day of Sha’aban.

The announcement, conveyed in a statement signed by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaid, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, urged Muslims to dedicate the month to prayers for national unity, peace and improved security.

However, some countries including Japan, Oman, Singapore and Turkey fixed Thursday, February 19, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan due to differences in moon sighting confirmations.

Meanwhile, Christians began Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 18. The 40-day observance of prayer, fasting and almsgiving will continue until Easter. Unlike Ramadan, Lent is determined by the solar calendar, making a shared start date uncommon.

In his 2026 Lenten message, Pope Leo XIV encouraged Christians to abstain from hurtful speech, describing it as a meaningful yet often overlooked form of fasting. He called on believers to pursue spiritual renewal, listen attentively to God and to one another, and extend compassion to the poor and vulnerable.

Religious leaders have noted that this rare overlap presents a unique opportunity to strengthen interfaith understanding, foster mutual respect and promote peaceful coexistence among adherents of both religions.
