EVERY February 1, people across the globe mark World Hijab Day (WHD)—a day set aside to promote understanding, tolerance, and respect for Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab.

THE THEME: #UNITYINHIJAB

This year’s theme, #UnityInHijab, highlights solidarity across cultures, faiths, and backgrounds. It calls on society to move beyond prejudice and stand together against discrimination, affirming that the hijab can be a unifying symbol of dignity, faith, and shared humanity—not division. The theme reinforces the message that supporting hijab-wearing women is a collective responsibility.

THE ORIGIN OF WORLD HIJAB DAY

World Hijab Day was established in 2013 by Nazma Khan, a Bangladeshi-American activist based in New York. After facing repeated discrimination for wearing the hijab, she launched the initiative to encourage non-Muslim women to wear the hijab for one day, helping them understand the lived realities of Muslim women.

From a modest beginning, WHD has grown into a worldwide movement, now recognized in over 190 countries, with participation from schools, institutions, media platforms, and human rights advocates.

WHY IT STILL MATTERS

Despite progress, many Muslim women continue to encounter Islamophobia, exclusion, and workplace bias because of their appearance. World Hijab Day confronts these challenges by amplifying authentic stories and showcasing hijab-wearing women as active contributors to society—students, professionals, leaders, athletes, and innovators.

MORE THAN A HEADSCARF

World Hijab Day goes beyond clothing. It is about freedom of belief, women’s agency, and mutual respect in a diverse world. It urges societies to defend the right to wear the hijab just as firmly as the right not to.

As the world observes World Hijab Day today, one message stands out:

Stand together. Embrace diversity. Unite in respect.
