2026 'EID-UL-KABĪR: ROAD USERS, COMMUTERS FACE TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK AS TRAVELLING GAINS MOMENTUM

AS preparations for the upcoming 'Eid-ul-Kabir celebration gather pace across Nigeria, commuters and motorists in several cities are experiencing increased traffic congestion as many people begin moving to different destinations ahead of the festivities.

Major roads and transport routes have witnessed a rise in vehicular movement, with passengers traveling to reunite with families and participate in Sallah activities.

Commercial transport hubs are also seeing increased activity as travelers make early arrangements to avoid last-minute delays.

The development comes as the Federal Government declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for this year's Eid-ul-Adha celebration, creating an extended break expected to increase travel nationwide. 

Authorities have also introduced measures to ease the anticipated movement pressure on major highways. Reports indicate that sections of the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano road corridor undergoing construction have been reopened temporarily to support smoother traffic flow during the festive period and reduce delays for travelers. 

Many travelers expressed concerns over delays and prolonged travel times, while others said they preferred to embark on their journeys earlier than usual to avoid peak travel periods commonly associated with Sallah celebrations.

Security and traffic management agencies are expected to increase monitoring and operational activities across strategic roads and transport points to maintain order and ensure safer movement during the holiday season. Government officials have also encouraged motorists to comply with traffic rules and exercise caution while traveling. 

'Eid-ul-Kabir, popularly known in some parts of Nigeria as Sallah or Ileya, traditionally witnesses increased movement as families, workers and residents travel across states for prayers, celebrations and family gatherings. 

For many commuters, however, the excitement surrounding the celebration is already being accompanied by the familiar challenge of traffic congestion on major roads across the country.
