BREAKING: EU SLAPS TEMU WITH €200 MILLION FINE OVER SALE OF ILLEGAL PRODUCTS

THE European Union has imposed a €200 million fine on the popular online shopping platform, Temu after regulators found that illegal and unsafe products were being sold through the company’s marketplace.

EU authorities announced today (Thursday) that the Chinese-owned e-commerce platform failed to properly assess and control the risks linked to dangerous goods available to consumers across Europe.

According to the European Commission, investigations revealed that buyers within the European Union were highly exposed to products that did not meet required safety standards. Some of the items reportedly identified during checks included unsafe baby toys, faulty electronic chargers and other non-compliant goods considered risky for consumers.

The penalty was issued under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), a law introduced to ensure major online platforms take stronger responsibility for protecting users and monitoring illegal content and products sold online.

EU officials stated that Temu did not carry out adequate risk assessments capable of preventing the circulation of harmful items on its platform. Regulators also accused the company of underestimating the frequency at which European consumers could encounter illegal products while shopping online.

Speaking on the development, EU technology chief Henna Virkkunen said large digital marketplaces operating within Europe are expected to strictly comply with consumer safety regulations and improve oversight of products displayed on their platforms.

The fine marks one of the biggest enforcement actions taken under the Digital Services Act and adds to growing scrutiny facing international e-commerce companies operating in Europe.

Temu, which rapidly expanded across global markets through heavily discounted products and aggressive online advertising, is yet to fully resolve other ongoing concerns linked to consumer protection and platform accountability within the EU.

European regulators have reportedly directed the company to present stronger compliance measures aimed at preventing future violations and improving safety monitoring systems for sellers and products listed on the platform.
