EID-UL-ADHA PRAYER: SHEIKH AMUBIEYA WARNS MUSLIMS AGAINST DESPERATION FOR LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

THE Director of Darul Hadeeth Arabic School, Gbagi, Ibadan, Sheikh Sulaiman Muhammad Awwal Amubieya, has cautioned Muslims against excessive desire for worldly leadership positions, warning that such ambitions may lead to regret if not handled with sincerity and responsibility.

Sheikh Amubieya gave the admonition on Wednesday shortly after leading the Eid-ul-Adha congregational prayer held at the Iyana Bodija prayer ground in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Addressing worshippers after the prayer session, the Islamic scholar delivered a sermon centred on the dangers associated with the pursuit of authority and public office without proper accountability before Allah.

Drawing references from the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sheikh Amubieya explained that the Prophet warned against eagerness for leadership positions because of the heavy responsibilities attached to them.

According to him, a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah quoted the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as saying: “You will eagerly seek positions of authority, but they will become a source of regret on the Day of Resurrection.”

He added that the warning serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious in seeking positions of leadership or influence without sincerity, justice and fear of Allah.

The cleric further cited the example of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, one of the companions of the Prophet, whom the Prophet reportedly advised against seeking public leadership due to the weight and trust attached to such responsibilities.

“Sheikh Amubieya explained that leadership in Islam is a trust and responsibility, not merely a means of attaining worldly recognition or power,” he said during the sermon.

He stressed that Muslims should prioritise the protection of their faith, moral conduct and accountability to Allah above worldly ambitions, regardless of their social or political status.

Sheikh Amubieya also congratulated Muslims on the occasion of this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration and urged the faithful to celebrate within the limits prescribed by Islam.

He advised Muslims to avoid acts forbidden in Islam during the festive period and instead uphold righteousness, moderation and gratitude while observing the celebration.
