PUBLIC primary and secondary schools across Oyo State have begun to witness major disruptions on Monday, June 1st, 2026, following the commencement of an indefinite strike earlier declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

The action comes amid growing concerns over the abduction of teachers and pupils in parts of the state, a development that has generated widespread reactions from education stakeholders, parents and community leaders.

With the strike taking effect, many public schools remained largely inactive as teachers complied with the union's directive to suspend classroom activities until further notice. The union said the decision was aimed at drawing attention to the security challenges confronting schools and the need for urgent measures to safeguard learners and education workers.

The situation has also fueled public demonstrations in some areas, particularly in Ibadan, where concerned residents and stakeholders have continued to call for intensified efforts to secure the release of the victims and strengthen security around educational institutions.

Parents expressed worries over the impact of the strike on academic activities, especially as many pupils and students are preparing for examinations and end-of-session assessments. Some guardians, however, described the union's action as a necessary step to highlight the dangers faced by teachers and schoolchildren.

Education observers noted that the development underscores the growing concerns surrounding school safety in several communities, urging authorities to prioritize the protection of schools and ensure that learning environments remain secure.

As of the time of this report, efforts to secure the freedom of the abducted victims were said to be ongoing, while stakeholders continue to appeal for swift action that would allow normal academic activities to resume.
