CONFIRMED: JAMB MAKES NCE SOLE ENTRY ROUTE FOR COLLEGES OF EDUCATION

ABUJA, NIGERIA — THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that candidates seeking admission into Colleges of Education will, from the 2026/2027 academic session, be required to enrol through the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) pathway.

Under the new policy, fresh admissions into degree programmes run by Colleges of Education in affiliation with universities will no longer be processed through JAMB.

The board disclosed the change in its updated admission guidelines for Colleges of Education, stating that admissions into 100-level and 200-level affiliated degree programmes have been discontinued.

According to JAMB, the reform is designed to strengthen teacher education and restore the NCE as the primary qualification route for prospective teachers.

Candidates who had previously applied for affiliated degree programmes in Colleges of Education have been advised to consider available transition options, including switching to the NCE track, transferring to a parent university where applicable, or choosing another institution.

JAMB also introduced stricter admission procedures, including mandatory verification of candidates’ O'Level results before admission can be finalised.

The board directed Colleges of Education and admission officers nationwide to comply fully with the revised guidelines.

The new policy does not affect Direct Entry admissions into Nigerian universities for holders of qualifications such as the National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), NCE, IJMB, JUPEB, or A-Level certificates.

Similarly, universities will continue to offer bachelor's degree programmes in education through their regular admission channels.

The change applies specifically to fresh admissions into university-affiliated degree programmes hosted by Colleges of Education.

Education stakeholders say the move could reshape teacher training in Nigeria by placing greater emphasis on specialised teaching qualifications while streamlining the admission process for Colleges of Education.
