CONFIRMED: POLICE INVESTIGATE KADUNA’S WOMAN LYNCHING OVER ALLEGED CHILD THEFT

A woman identified as Ummulkhair Usman Aliyu was killed by a mob in Maraban Jos, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, after she was accused of child theft, in a weird and heartbreaking incident in Nigeria.

According to information confirmed by the Kaduna State Police Command, the woman had been taken into police custody following the allegation before a crowd gathered outside the police station. The command said the situation escalated when the mob attacked the facility, overpowered security personnel and forcibly removed the woman from custody. She was subsequently beaten and set ablaze.

Police authorities described the incident as a criminal act and disclosed that investigations had commenced. The command also announced that several suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack on the police station and the killing, while efforts continue to identify and apprehend other individuals involved.

The incident has generated widespread reactions across social media and within civil society, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the continued occurrence of jungle justice despite repeated public warnings and previous prosecutions in similar cases.

The killing has also drawn attention because of claims made by members of the victim's family regarding the events that unfolded before her death.

The victim's husband alleged that his wife had been wrongfully accused and that she was handed back to the crowd after being taken into police custody. He further claimed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the station played a role in the events leading to her death.

As of the time of publication, these allegations have not been independently verified by Pen Blog Media. The Kaduna State Police Command has not publicly confirmed the husband's account regarding the conduct of the DPO, and no official findings have been released on that aspect of the incident.

No evidence has so far been presented by law enforcement authorities indicating that the deceased had been found guilty of kidnapping or any related offence. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the increasing resort to mob violence in parts of the country. Legal experts have consistently warned that such actions undermine the rule of law by denying suspects the constitutional right to fair investigation and trial while exposing innocent persons to irreversible harm.

Human rights advocates have also renewed calls for stronger enforcement against jungle justice, arguing that public confidence in the justice system cannot be restored through extrajudicial violence.
