KOLA OYEWO DIES AT 80, NOLLYWOOD MOURNS ICONIC ACTOR AND THEATRE SCHOLAR

VETERAN Nigerian actor, dramatist, and theatre scholar, Dr. Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades in the country's theatre and film industry.

The news of his passing was made public on Friday night by fellow Nollywood actor Kunle Afod, who paid tribute to the late thespian in a heartfelt message shared on his official Instagram page.

Announcing the loss, Afod described Oyewo as a legendary figure whose contributions to Nigerian theatre and cinema would remain unforgettable.

The late actor was widely respected for his exceptional performances on stage and screen, as well as his influence on generations of actors, playwrights, and theatre practitioners across Nigeria.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his professional acting journey in 1964 after joining the renowned Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. His talent and dedication soon established him as one of the most celebrated figures in Yoruba theatre.

He gained national and continental recognition for his portrayal of Odewale in the acclaimed stage production, "The Gods Are Not to Blame," written by legendary playwright Ola Rotimi. The role remains one of the most memorable performances in African theatre history.

Throughout his illustrious career, Oyewo featured in several notable productions, including "Saworoide," "Sango," "Koseegbe," "Efunsetan Aniwura," and numerous other Yoruba-language films that contributed significantly to the growth of Nigeria's entertainment industry.

Beyond acting, he distinguished himself in academia. After earning degrees in Theatre Arts and Drama, including a doctorate from the University of Ibadan, Oyewo lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer's University, and later Elizade University, where he continued mentoring young talents in the performing arts.

His impact extended far beyond the screen, as many actors and theatre professionals credit him for helping shape their careers through his teaching, mentorship, and dedication to preserving Nigeria's cultural heritage.
