LAGOS, NIGERIA — June 16, 2026: Muslims across Nigeria have commenced the Islamic New Year following the official declaration of Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as the first day of Muharram 1448 AH.
The announcement was made by the National Moon-Sighting Committee (NMSC) under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, after the conclusion of the crescent moon verification process.
In a statement shared by the committee on Monday night, the Secretary of the NMSC, Yahaya Muhammad Boyi, confirmed the development.
“His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, has declared Tuesday, 16/6/2026, as the first day of Muharram 1448 AH,” the statement read.
The committee subsequently issued an update on Tuesday morning, stating:
“Today’s date is Tuesday, 1st Muharram 1448 AH / 16th June 2026.”
The declaration follows reports from moon-sighting teams across the country and aligns Nigeria’s observance of the new Hijri year with several other Muslim-majority nations, including Saudi Arabia.
Earlier, the National Moon-Sighting Committee had announced that Monday, June 15, 2026, corresponded to 29 Dhul-Hijjah 1447 AH, signalling the final day of the Islamic year pending confirmation of the new crescent.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, marks the beginning of a new Hijri year, which commemorates the historic migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah.
The month is regarded as one of the four sacred months in Islam and is observed by Muslims worldwide with prayers, reflection, and renewed spiritual commitments.
The tenth day of Muharram, known as ‘Āshūrā’, is expected to fall on Thursday, June 25, 2026, subject to local moon-sighting confirmations.
As the new Islamic year begins, religious leaders across Nigeria have called on Muslims to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, security, and national development.
Pen Blog Media extends its warm wishes to the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and around the world for a peaceful and blessed 1448 AH.
