Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister Following Keir Starmer's Resignation

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — Sir Keir Starmer has formally stepped down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, bringing his tenure to an end after nearly two years in office and paving the way for Andy Burnham to become Britain's new head of government.

Starmer officially submitted his resignation to King Charles III on Monday following weeks of political transition within the governing Labour Party. His departure comes after mounting pressure from within the party and a decline in public support, leading Labour members to back a change in leadership.

Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, has now assumed office as Prime Minister after emerging as the Labour Party's new leader. He becomes the seventh person to hold the office of British Prime Minister since 2016, marking another significant chapter in the country's recent political history.

In his farewell address outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer reflected on his time in office, highlighting achievements including support for Ukraine, strengthened workers' rights, increased defence spending, measures aimed at reducing child poverty, and legislation designed to improve public accountability. He expressed confidence that the United Kingdom was in a stronger position than when his government took office and wished his successor success.

Speaking ahead of taking office, Burnham pledged to restore confidence in government, focus on improving living standards, stimulate economic growth and reduce political division. He is also expected to announce a reshuffled Cabinet as his administration begins work on its policy agenda.

Burnham's appointment follows an internal Labour Party leadership transition rather than a nationwide general election, a process permitted under the United Kingdom's parliamentary system, where the governing party can replace its leader while retaining power if it continues to command a majority in the House of Commons.

The leadership change is expected to be closely watched by international allies and financial markets as the new Prime Minister prepares to outline his government's priorities in the coming days.
