FG DECLARES TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, PUBLIC HOLIDAY FOR EID UL MAWLID

THE Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora on the occasion and urged Nigerians to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to others.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He encouraged Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to reflect on these values and use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion.

The minister also urged citizens to celebrate the occasion with restraint and mutual respect, stressing the importance of peaceful coexistence and collective responsibility for maintaining national unity.

Tunji-Ojo wished the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.

The declaration means Tuesday, August 25, 2026, will be observed as a public holiday across Nigeria in commemoration of Eid ul Mawlid.
