LAGOS, Nigeria — OPay Digital Services has dismissed as false a viral notice claiming that the fintech company will suspend its operations and begin an indefinite break from September 1, 2026.
The notice, which circulated on social media and messaging platforms, reportedly advised OPay customers to withdraw or transfer their funds ahead of the alleged shutdown, while claiming that the company would stop handling transactions and account-related services.
OPay, however, has rejected the publication and assured customers that it has no plan to suspend its operations from September 1.
In a statement shared through its verified communication channels, the company said: “OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!”
The fintech also urged members of the public to examine the circulating publication carefully, saying the fake material contains identifiable inconsistencies that distinguish it from the company's legitimate communications.
OPay advised customers to rely on its verified platforms for announcements concerning its services and to verify suspicious claims before sharing them or taking action.
EXECUTIVE WARNS AGAINST PANIC
The company's Vice President of Public and Government Affairs, Dr Maxwell Loko, separately described the viral publication as “false, malicious and misleading.”
Loko cautioned customers against withdrawing or transferring their funds because of the fabricated notice, stressing that the alleged shutdown did not originate from OPay.
He further warned that deliberately spreading false information capable of causing panic or undermining confidence in a financial institution could have legal consequences.
The warning comes as the fabricated notice continues to attract attention online, where unverified financial claims can spread rapidly and potentially influence customers' decisions.
WHAT CUSTOMERS SHOULD KNOW
Based on OPay's latest public clarification, there is no announced September 1 shutdown or indefinite break.
Customers who encounter the viral notice are advised not to treat it as an official company announcement. Instead, significant information about OPay's operations should be verified through the company's authenticated communication channels.
The incident is another reminder of the risks associated with relying on forwarded messages, screenshots and unofficial social-media publications for information concerning financial services.
As of the latest statement from OPay, the company has rejected the shutdown claim and says it is continuing its operations.
