Nigeria at 66

THE Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on Wednesday, September 30.

The statement, signed by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, confirmed that Thursday would be observed nationwide as a public holiday in celebration of the country's independence.

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.

The Federal Government called on Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the country's journey since independence and reaffirm their commitment to national unity, patriotism and peaceful coexistence.

The Minister also extended the government's greetings to Nigerians at home and abroad, wishing citizens a peaceful and meaningful Independence Day celebration.

The declaration means government offices and other establishments observing public holidays will be closed on Thursday, October 1, in commemoration of the anniversary.

The Federal Government had earlier announced plans for a relatively low-key programme of activities to mark the 66th Independence Anniversary.

Pen Blog Media will continue to provide verified updates on the Independence Day programme and other major national developments.
