SULTAN DECLARES SUNDAY AS 1ST RABI’ AL-THĀNĪ 1448 AH AFTER CRESCENT SIGHTING

THE Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Sunday, September 13, 2026, as the first day of Rabi’ al-Thānī 1448 AH in Nigeria.

The declaration follows the outcome of the nationwide search for the crescent marking the beginning of the Islamic month.

The National Moonsighting Committee of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) announced the commencement of Rabi’ al-Thānī 1448 AH in a statement issued on Saturday.

The committee had earlier called on Muslims across the country to look for the new crescent after sunset on Friday, September 11, corresponding to 29 Rabi’ al-Awwal 1448 AH.

The Sultanate had directed Muslims who sighted the crescent to report their observations through the appropriate traditional authorities for verification before an official declaration was made.

Following the conclusion of the sighting process, the Sultan declared Sunday, September 13, as 1 Rabi’ al-Thānī 1448 AH.

The declaration establishes the beginning of the fourth month of the Islamic lunar calendar for Muslims observing the Nigerian moon-sighting determination.

The National Moonsighting Committee is the relevant body through which the NSCIA coordinates information relating to the sighting of the new crescent in Nigeria.

The development also follows the Sultanate's established practice of calling for nationwide crescent observations before announcing the beginning of a new Islamic month.

Muslims across Nigeria are therefore expected to recognise Sunday, September 13, 2026, as 1 Rabi’ al-Thānī 1448 AH, in accordance with the Sultan's declaration.

The date may differ from some pre-calculated Hijri calendars used in other countries or communities, as such calendars can be based on astronomical calculations rather than Nigeria's officially adopted local moon-sighting determination.

The National Moonsighting Committee had published its Rabi’ al-Thānī 1448 AH crescent-sighting alert ahead of the September 11 observation, underscoring the role of actual crescent sighting in determining the beginning of the month.
